Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: Develops new or modified process formulations, defines processing or handling equipment requirements and specifications, and reviews processing techniques and methods applied in the manufacture, fabrication, and evaluation of products. Involvement may begin at any step from pilot plant to full-scale manufacturing. Coordinates design requirement review with appropriate engineering/scientific personnel to ensure compatibility of processing methods. Compiles and evaluates test data to determine appropriate limits and variables for process or material specifications. May conceive and plan projects involving definition and selection of new concepts, equipment automation technology, and approaches in the processing or development of new or improved processes.


  • Support Advanced Technology Development projects by developing and thoroughly characterizing robust unit processes as building blocks of next generation technologies.
  • Once released to production, take ownership of the unit processes in the Etch section. This includes sustaining process performance, while driving for continuous capability improvement.
  • Support daily production to ensure on-time-delivery of top quality product. This includes disposition of held lots and prescribing appropriate rework processing as necessary.  May require team participation to rapidly contain yield/quality excursions and drive corrective actions.
  • Participate in fab-wide continuous improvement efforts affecting key metrics. 
  • Work with Operations team, following a “work cell” model, to optimize the overall performance of the Etch area and enhance the skills/knowledge of Operations personnel.
  • Engage in development opportunities to incorporate Etch unit processes into company-wide initiatives for automation, data analytics, and synergy.


  • At a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, material science, engineering, physics, or related discipline, ideally with course work and internship in semiconductor processing,
  • At least 4-6 years of experience in the micro-electronics industry, in a process engineer role
  • A functional level of proficiency with the following is required:  Documentation System Software (e.g. QSI), a Manufacturing Execution Systems (e.g. PROMIS, WorkStream or Eyelit), Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel & PowerPoint), Microsoft Outlook and Statistical Process Control software (e.g. Encore).
  • A working knowledge of basic electrical testing of semiconductors is highly desirable.
  • The ideal candidate will have expertise/knowledge primarily in Wet Etch & Cleans, plus, to a lesser degree, some expertise/knowledge in one or more of the following disciplines:  Photolithography, Thin Films (Thin Film Deposition, Electroplating, Ion Implantation & Thermal Processes) and Final Process (Grinding & Mount/Dismount).
  • The ideal candidate will also be detail oriented with an insatiable desire to learn and grow in his/her role.  He/She will have experience applying structured problem solving methods (e.g. Lean, Shainin or Six Sigma), plus a working knowledge of SPC and basic data analysis skills, using such tools as JMP, MiniTab, Spotfire, Exensio, and DataPower.
  • The successful candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, the initiative to address and appropriately escalate problems to achieve rapid resolution, the ability to work effectively and collaboratively with engineering peer groups across various shifts, and the ability and willingness to work in a cleanroom semiconductor processing environment.
